Toa Payoh Lorong 4 Kway Chap

After trying so many Kway Chap stalls…..

THIS got to be JAF’s FAVOURITE Kuey Chap stall in Singapore! :)

Look at the queue! It is NEVER ending! The boss told us the customers start to queue up even before the stall opens at 5.00pm.

Boss, how much is it huh???

This is one of the reasons that draw the crowd here! The “Kuey” (flat sheet noodles) texture is soooo….SMOOTH, soooo…THIN and soooo…YUMMY!! Trust JAF, it just melts in your mouth!!! Oh, we love the broth too! It’s light, tasty, very flavourful and topped with fried shallots too! *Slurp!!*

JAF NEVER fail to order 2 plates of innards and pork belly here! Most importantly, they are carefully cleaned and does not leave a “porky” smell in the mouth. Each and every piece of meat is evenly braised. The pork belly’s skin is so soft and tender that you would not even bother about your calories the moment you put in your mouth! *Yums!*

They also have other side orders like fish cake, tau pok, eggs etc…and they taste as good too!

Total bill: $18.20
5 bowls of Kway Chaps and
1 serving of Kiam Cai (preserved vegetables)
2 servings of Innards + Pork Belly + Tau Pok + Egg + Fish Cake

One of the sights you will never miss when you walk into “Pek Kio Hawker” is…this SUPER LONG queue!

This is the prawn soup that draws the huge crowd here everyday! Our $10 Hae Mee!
You can buy a bowl of Hae Mee here at $3, $5, $8 or $10.
- For $3, you will get a few slices of “deshelled and headless” prawns.
- For $5, you will get 3 to 4 “shelled” prawns.
- For $8 and $10, you will get 3 KING prawns served in a mini wok. (Ain’t sure what is the difference between the 2 prices but heard that the sizes of the prawns are different.)

If you like ‘Bak You Pok”(Pork Lard), you will definitely love their dry noodles. Loads of bak you pok and shallots sprinkled on top of the noodles. *Yums!!*

Are you craving for Wanton Mee at night but don’t know where to find one? Come to Havelock Road Cooked Food Centre! They are opened from 7pm – 10.15pm.

Fyi: JAF waited slightly more than half an hour for our Wanton Mee!! *6 people in the queue and the crowd kept coming in…* (>_<)

Where can you find a bowl of Wanton Mee @ $2.50 these days?

For the price of $2.50, it’s actually quite a big plate topped with a generous portion of char siew. Definitely very worthwhile! Hehe…

The texture of the noodles is very “Q”. The wantons are actually “so-so” only…
*What we like most is the chilli! Mix and toss the noodles with the chilli, then twirl them with the chopsticks and put in your mouth…Shiokadoo!!!

Old Airport Road Food Centre

Old Airport Road Food Centre is one of the many famous local eating places in Singapore. JAF rarely frequents there, but we decided we wanted to search for some nice and delicious food, and so we specially made a trip down to Old Airport Road Food Centre.

After a tour round the food centre, JAF found that there are two wanton mee stalls almost side by side along the row that is facing the road. Both look equally good with impressive certificates and newspaper cuttings, but JAF was more attracted to the stall with a electronic queue display.

Traditional bowl with picture of cock.

Egg noodles are served here, and cooked with black sauce.

The wantons and the char siew are nicely done.

An interesting stall name, “老夫子” is known as Old Master Q in English, a cartoon character originated from Hong Kong.

The fried kway teow here reportedly does not contain salt and MSG. Served on banana leaf, it’s fried with black soya sauce and sweet sauce. Overall quite flavoursome, though not all the cockles tasted good.

Now it’s time to try some freshly handmade chee cheong fun ($2/piece). What JAF loves most about the chee cheong fun is it’s soft, smooth and silky. JAF has never eaten such “yummier” chee cheong fun!
This is one dish JAF will happily return for over and over again.

Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck

A close friend of JAF who stays near Ghim Moh has always shared with us that there is a SUPERB braised duck stall that we MUST TRY! So here we go…

Besides braised duck rice, there are noodles and porridge as well.
*This is the second stall. The first one is at Tanjong Pagar food centre.*

Price: $3.00 + $0.50(Braised Egg or “Lor Neng”) = $3.50
Verdict:The meat is well braised and tender…and the sauce is thick, smooth and saucy. Perfect combination!
JAF love the Vinegar Chilli too! Oh…and if you love herbal taste soup…you will love the soup here. Fyi…JAF asked for second helping! Hehe! :)

Every piece of meat is equally sliced and placed nicely.
Recommendation: Try the Braised Duck Drumstick…heard it’s even more tender and juicier!
*JAF actually wanted to order one drumstick but all sold out!*

Another JAF’s favourite – Duck Liver. Price: $0.50
Verdict: Cooked just right, not too hard, almost perfect!

Pig Trotters @ Zion Road

This is the THIRD entry on pig trotters. What to do? JAF just simply love pig trotters, maybe should consider sparking off a “Pig Trotters / Pork Knuckles Series” yeah…hmm…Anyway, this time we are at Boon Tong Kee Kway Chap Braised Duck, situated at Zion Riverside Food Centre which is opposite Great World City.

*To check out the previous two entries, please click:

JAF tries out the Kway Chap first. Thick gravy over duck meat, beancurd and some other other ingredients, this is a dish full of flavour.

Kway Chap one person

Braised Pig Trotters / Pork Knuckles ($4/$5)

Pork front hocks are used here. Meat is tender and succulent, the velvety and delightful layer of fat and skin…OMG, is soft and airy light and JAF could feel the smooth flesh melting slowly away in the mouth. Wonderful sensation… :)
The meat has a slight gamy smell but it is not very distinct.
Overall, JAF has only one little complaint: the gravy is a tad too saltish, but fortunately there is rice to go along with.

And “Pig Trotters / Pork Knuckles Series” fourth entry will be coming up soon anytime!

Dong Dong Curry Chicken and Tom Yam Soup @ Clementi

First time here at Clementi West Food Centre…it’s a big place indeed.

The original plan was to try out the duck rice stall JAF’s fren had been talking about, but alas, it was the stall’s rest day. Too bad… :(
Hmm…how about this Dong Dong stall then? We saw a number of customers queuing up in front and the stall looked very welcoming to us too.

Dong Dong offers a variety of dishes: claypot cuisines like claypot sesame chicken and claypot tofu, fish soup/beehoon, vermicelli, gong bao chicken rice, teriyaki chicken rice, thai style chicken rice and a few others.

We noticed the queuers in front all seemed to be ordering either the curry chicken or the tom yam seafood soup. So of course we followed suit.

Tom Yam Seafood Soup + Rice or Beehoon ($4.00)

JAF’s friend had this for lunch. Looks good and there are lots of ingredients.

Curry Chicken + Rice or Beehoon ($4.00)

The curry is definitely a good choice for those who can’t take it too spicy. And the chicken meat is tangy and juicy enough. Worth mentioning is the generous serving of chicken meat pieces. JAF was extremely full by the end of the meal.

Check out this soya bean drink / grass jelly drink stall. A very popular stall with a super long queue.

NaNa Homemade Curry Fish Head @ Bedok

Anyone heard of NaNa Homemade Curry Fish Head? It was featured on both Channel 8 food program “Where The Queue Starts”, and the papers before. It’s situated in the NTUC Foodfare coffeeshop near to Bedok Bus Interchange.
JAF and friends happened to pass by, and since one of them had tried before and like it, we decided to settle our lunch here.

The curry fish head takes some time to prepare, so here we are waiting patiently for its arrival.

Ingredients inside the claypot include: tau pok, yam, brinjal, lady’s fingers etc.

The fish head meat is fresh and tender. The “snow-white” meat contrasted starkly with the deep rich colour of the curry.

As for the curry taste, the friend who had tried it before commented that it was slightly different from the other time he ate it. Still not bad, just that something was lacking.

Well, for JAF who is trying it for the first time, the overall taste is still delicious, though it may not be spicy enough for spice lovers…

Heard that this Yong Tau Foo stall also not bad…

We heard that the surrounding area including this coffeeshop will be reconstructed to become a big shopping mall. So…where will all the stalls be relocated to? Will we still see NaNa Homemade Curry Fish Head around?

A Little Tour @ Tiong Bahru Market

Happy New Year! First entry for year 2011!

Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre is one place closely linked with great yummy eats, which most of us should be familiar with.
JAF is not a regular visitor here, so after walking one round, we decided to just focus on one side of the food centre and pick out 4 stalls.

JAF suddenly had a craving for fried oyster omelette after spotting the above stall.

We like the crisp fried eggs and the not too gooey starch mixture. There are about 4 oysters for the cheapest order of $3.00.
Together with the tangy chilli sauce, this is a very likeable dish.

Chwee kueh (steamed rice cake made from rice flour) has always been one of JAF’s favourite snack, so this is one food that cannot be missed.
Apparently this stall is quite famous and had won a few awards: “Lianhe Wanbao Classified Ads Favourite Stall”, ”The Greenbook Best Food Award 05/06” and ”Makansutra 2009”.

4 for $1.00, 6 for $1.50, 8 for $2.00.
The chwee kueh is a tad soft, there are bits of black sesame seeds within the chye poh, but we felt that the chye poh (preserved radish) topping could be more savoury.
Still, there is one thing worth mentioning: the chye poh is not as greasy like some other places.

Is it true that the quality of a stall’s food is based on the length of the customer queue?
Well, there is a constant flow of customers to this Teochew Fishball noodles stall, so JAF was compelled to join in the queue too.

At first sight, the bowl of noodles certainly looks tempting. One look at the shape of the fishballs, and you know they are handmade and bound to taste good. Truly, they do not have much of the fishy taste and the springy texture is definitely different as compared to the factory made fishballs.

Kway Teow is smooth in texture.

Chili based. The more you eat, the spicier it gets.

Price: $2.50/$3.00

Teochew Fishball Noodle Dry/Soup
#02-13

While queuing up for the Teochew Fishball Noodles, JAF was attracted to the photos posted at the neighbouring stall. Seems like artistes such as Mai Hao Wei and Charmaine Sheh (Hong Kong actress) had visited the stall before, and it was specially recommended by Channel U food program “Makan King” as well.

There are quite a number of varieties: curry fishhead (half $18, whole $28), curry fish meat ($6), curry pork ribs ($4), curry mutton ($3/$5), curry chicken ($3) and curry vegetable ($3). You can choose either rice or bread for $0.50.

We ordered the curry chicken. One sip of the curry and oooh…that’s so hot!
Conclusion: the curry is super thick and luscious, and really spicy.

Ever wonder what is good for breakfast on a Sunday morning? JAF came upon this old authentic kopitiam while heading to Tiong Bahru market for the famous “Lor Mee”. So instead of “Lor Mee”, we decided to stop over here…

Old signboard which you hardly see these days…
The setting of this kopitiam is really “old school”. After we stepped in, we realised that besides the kopi stall, there is another stall selling Fishball noodles. Yup! Only 2 stalls in the kopitiam!

Check out the Kopi stall’s “Antique” counter!

What is morning without a hot cuppa Kopi right?
The kopi served here is really thick and good. And the sweet aroma wakes you up!

While waiting for our noodles to be served, we saw many plates of “Loti” on the other tables around us. So we ordered 2 slices to try out. The bread is thinly sliced and lightly toasted, accompanied with a spread of thick Kaya and freshly cut butter from the fridge. One word to describe ~ Awesome!
*Price: 2 Kopi + 1 set Loti = $2.20*

Having breakfast while listening to your bird sing…That’s life :)

Instead of having all the ingredients mixed together with the noodles, over here they are served separately. JAF love their “Hee Kiao” (Fish dumplings)! No fishy taste and you can’t seem to get enough of them! As for the fishballs, they are very bouncy and tasty.
*Hee Kiao ~ a type of small dumpling made with fish meat paste wrapping a small bit of minced meat*

Fried garlic and shallots are sprinkled on top of the Kway Teow, hmm…delicious.

What is fishball noodles without “Mee Pok”? The “Mee Pok” has a smooth texture and there is a hint of vinegar too. And of course not forgetting JAF’s favourite ~ “Bak You Pok” (Pork Lard)!

When was the last time you used a pair of wooden chopsticks?
