Happy New Year! First entry for year 2011!
Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre is one place closely linked with great yummy eats, which most of us should be familiar with.
JAF is not a regular visitor here, so after walking one round, we decided to just focus on one side of the food centre and pick out 4 stalls.

JAF suddenly had a craving for fried oyster omelette after spotting the above stall.

We like the crisp fried eggs and the not too gooey starch mixture. There are about 4 oysters for the cheapest order of $3.00.
Together with the tangy chilli sauce, this is a very likeable dish.

Closed on Wednesdays

Chwee kueh (steamed rice cake made from rice flour) has always been one of JAF’s favourite snack, so this is one food that cannot be missed.
Apparently this stall is quite famous and had won a few awards: “Lianhe Wanbao Classified Ads Favourite Stall”, ”The Greenbook Best Food Award 05/06” and ”Makansutra 2009”.

4 for $1.00, 6 for $1.50, 8 for $2.00.
The chwee kueh is a tad soft, there are bits of black sesame seeds within the chye poh, but we felt that the chye poh (preserved radish) topping could be more savoury.
Still, there is one thing worth mentioning: the chye poh is not as greasy like some other places.

6.30am to 11pm daily

Is it true that the quality of a stall’s food is based on the length of the customer queue?
Well, there is a constant flow of customers to this Teochew Fishball noodles stall, so JAF was compelled to join in the queue too.

At first sight, the bowl of noodles certainly looks tempting. One look at the shape of the fishballs, and you know they are handmade and bound to taste good. Truly, they do not have much of the fishy taste and the springy texture is definitely different as compared to the factory made fishballs.

Kway Teow is smooth in texture.

Chili based. The more you eat, the spicier it gets.
Standby tissues for your runny nose and sweaty forehead.
Price: $2.50/$3.00

While queuing up for the Teochew Fishball Noodles, JAF was attracted to the photos posted at the neighbouring stall. Seems like artistes such as Mai Hao Wei and Charmaine Sheh (Hong Kong actress) had visited the stall before, and it was specially recommended by Channel U food program “Makan King” as well.

There are quite a number of varieties: curry fishhead (half $18, whole $28), curry fish meat ($6), curry pork ribs ($4), curry mutton ($3/$5), curry chicken ($3) and curry vegetable ($3). You can choose either rice or bread for $0.50.

We ordered the curry chicken. One sip of the curry and oooh…that’s so hot!
Conclusion: the curry is super thick and luscious, and really spicy.

Tender chicken meat.

Closed on Mondays

This stall is just beside Jian Bo Shui Kueh. Initially, we had planned to try out the “tow kwar pop”, but our stomachs were too full after so much food. Next time.
